Jack’s wonderland, part 1

According to the person who wrote the entry at Brian’s Page, Champagnegalopp (1975) is a “very weird erotic comedy”. It’s certainly offbeat, although it really isn’t THAT weird when compared to the Danish comedy film tradition in general.

The story, briefly summarised: Jack Armstrong (Ole Søltoft), a young aristocrat, is obsessed with the lovely Alice (Sue Longhurst) and is looking for some way to persuade her that they should have sex together very soon:

However, it’s the age of Queen Victoria and Alice upholds the moral values of society to the full. Growing desperate, Jack decides to prove that he is a man and not the sweet “rabbit” that Alice thinks he is. He builds a dungeon complete with torture devices and devious mechanisms, traps Alice and intends to finally have his way with her. However, it remains to be seen who has in fact trapped who.

Weird or not, this Danish-Swedish co-production is a rather bright little comedy containing many humorous points about Victorian morals and the way men and women perceive each other in general. It also contains some of the sexiest DID material I’ve encountered in any mainstream movie. It has been released on DVD as The Groove Room and What the Swedish Butler Saw, both with dubbed voices.
